Denver opened up the second quarter with three-consecutive goals to take the lead, 3-2. However, the Friars responded with three-straight goals of their own. Mazzone scored two back-to-back goals at the 4:31 mark and the 2:59 mark. McGuire and Perettine were credited with the assists, respectively. Perettine scored his second goal of the game, unassisted, with seven seconds left in the first half to take a 5-3 lead.
The Pioneers scored five goals in the first 5:02 minutes of the third quarter to take the lead, 8-5. Senior Peter Badgley (Summit, N.J.) spent all 60 minutes in net for Providence and collected 15 saves.
"I am extremely proud of our teams performance today at Denver," said head coach Chris Gabrielli. "We countered their face-off dominance in the first half with team defensive stops, great goal-tending, and efficient clearing. I am proud of the way we responded to their third quarter run to get back to 6-8 and then 7-9. Denver made an incredible save against one of our transition opportunities that could have made it a one goal game early in the 4th quarter. Our boys continue to fight and we continue to improve."
The Friars will conclude their regular-season schedule versus BIG EAST foe Villanova at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field in Providence, R.I. Prior to the game, Providence will honor its senior class and graduate students who will be competing in their final regular-season game with the Friars.
