PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 14 Brown, 15-11, on Tuesday, April 14 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 4-8 on the season, while the Bears improved to 9-3.
Junior Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) scored four goals to pace the Friar offense versus the Bears. It marks his third game in a row with three-or-more goals, after registering back-to-back hat tricks vs. Georgetown (April 4) and Marquette (April 11).
Brown jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal from Henry Blynn with 11:21 left in the first quarter. The Friars responded to even the game, 1-1, with an unassisted goal from senior Buck McClure (Dallas, Texas) with 7:55 remaining. Providence took a 2-1 lead shortly after (6:37) with a goal from Mazzone. The assist was credited to McClure.
With 4:47 left in the quarter, Brown's Blynn scored to conclude the first quarter tie, 2-2.
Brown opened up the second quarter with a goal from Matt Graham with 10:54 left in the second. Providence responded three minutes later (7:16) with an unassisted goal from freshman Joshua Keller (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to tie the game, 3-3. Brown pulled ahead with another goal with 6:30 left in the first half.
Sophomore Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) retaliated to tie the game, 4-4, but the Bears scored two unanswered goals heading into halftime and took a 6-4 lead into the break.
Providence cut Brown's lead to one (6-5) with a goal from senior Robert Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and an assist from Assaraf just 10-seconds into the third quarter.
Brown held Providence to one goal and scored four within eight minutes to find a four point lead, 10-6.
Mazzone got the Friars back on the scoreboard as he picked up his second goal with 48-seconds left in the third quarter, which cut the deficit to three (10-7)
Mazzone registered his fourth hat trick of the season 55-seconds into the fourth quarter to get the Friars within two (10-8). Brown responded a minute later to take an 11-8 lead.
Mazzone picked up another unassisted goal, marking his fourth tally of the game at the 10:08 mark to bring the Friars within two (11-9).
Brown found the back of the net once more, but Providence Sean McGuire (Wyckoff, N.J.) registered a goal to get within striking distance, once again (12-10), at the 5:52 mark.
With under five minutes left in the game, Brown put the game out of reach with a 4-1 scoring advantage. Perettine scored his second goal of the game with an assist from Assaraf with 2:10 left to cut Brown's lead to three, 14-11. Brown's Brendan Caputo notched one more goal for the final score, 15-11.
In net for the Friars was senior Peter Badgley (Summit, N.J.). He registered a career-high 21 saves. His prior career-high of 20 saves contributed to the Friar's 11-8 win versus Sacred Heart on March 7.
Sophomore Colin McKendry (Cary, N.C.) took all of Providence's face-offs and went 12-of-29 (.413) from the "X".
"Overall our effort and intensity was terrific tonight," said head coach Chris Gabrielli. "We played great team defense led by Jarrod Neumann. In addition, Peter Badgley had another amazing outing in net for us. Offensively, we were really clicking today and we were able to score in a lot of different ways. To Brown's credit, every time we clawed back within two, they responded with quick scores in the face-off game to keep us three back. Our team is gaining an identity at both ends of the field and we continue to improve, so despite the disappointment I am proud of our team."
The Friars return to action against BIG EAST foe Denver on April 18 in Denver, Colo. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
