Women's Hockey Plays Host To Mercyhurst In Home Opener

The Providence College women's ice hockey team will play host to the Mercyhurst Lakers in a weekend series at the newly renovated Schneider Arena. The Friars and Lakers will begin the two game series on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Providence's home opener. Providence and Mercyhurst will wrap-up the series on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday's game against No. 10 Mercyhurst will mark the Friars 2013-14 season home opener. Providence holds a 22-10-4 all-time mark in home openers. Providence and Mercyhurst have competed in the Friar's home opener once prior, with Providence hosting the Lakers for a weekend home opening series during the 2011-12 season. During that weekend series, Mercyhurst defeated the Friars in both games.

Last time out, the Friars split a weekend series with Union in their opening weekend of the 2013-14 season. Providence fell 5-2 on Oct. 4 before coming back to earn the program's fourth win against the Dutchwomen on Oct. 5. The Friars toppled Union 6-2 in that win and out shot the Dutch women 33-20. Freshman Cassidy Carels(Bruxelles, Manitoba) notched a goal in her collegiate debut on Oct. 4. Overall four rookies tallied at least one point over the opening weekend.

Mercyhurst holds a 1-2-0 record on the season with a 3-2 win at Minnesota State (Sept. 28). Most recently, the Lakers recorded a 4-3 loss to Ohio State on Oct. 5. Thirteen Lakers have tallied at least one point on the season, with Christine Bestland leading the team with five points on two goals and three assists. Shelby Bram follows Bestland in scoring and leads the team in assists with four. Amanda Makela has stood between the pipes for the majority of play with 178:54 minutes in three games. Makela has recorded a .877 save percentage and an 3.35 goals against average. The Lakers enter Saturday with a No. 10 ranking in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine Hockey Poll, released on Oct. 8.

Providence trails Mercyhurst in the all-time series 3-11-0. Last season, Mercyhurst swept Providence, 6-3 and 5-0, at home. Now Sophomore Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) notched her first collegiate point the Friars 6-3 loss on Oct. 12. The last time the Friars defeated Mercyhurst in their own barn was on Jan. 12, 2008, when Providence won by a margin of 7-3. Currently, five Friars have notched at least one career point against the Lakers.
