PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Providence College Track and Field teams will compete against the conference's best this weekend, tackling the BIG EAST Championships at Villanova's Jumbo Elliot Track.
The Friars are looking to continue a trend of conference success this school-year, having earned top-four finishes in both men's and women's cross country and snaring seven, top-five postings at the indoor championships.
On the men's side, a highlight will be the 1500-meters. Juniors David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) and Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) enter as potential favorites. Matthews currently holds the second best time in the league at this distance, having clocked a 3:41.72 at last month's Mt. Sac relays.
"It will be a very competitive field with some really great athletes," explained Providence Director of Track and Cross Country Operations Ray Treacy. "But (Matthews and McCarthy) are running very well right now and hopefully they will be in the mix."
The 5000-meters will feature the BIG EAST cross country champion, Providence junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England). Though he just competed in his first race since the fall, the All-American should be in contention. PC will also be strong in 4 x 800-meter relay.
On the women's side, junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) will look to continue her impressive campaign in the 3000-meter steeple chase. Davidson earned Second-Team All-American status in the indoor 3000.
"The steeple chase will be pretty competitive as well," said Treacy. "(Davidson's) ranked fourth in the conference going in, and with the Penn Relays behind her last week, she should go a lot quicker and hopefully that will be good enough to get her in the hunt for the title."
As with the men, the Friar women will also feature a dangerous 4 x 800 relay quartet.
The BIG EAST Championships will run through Sunday, May 8th.
