Track and Field Shines at Bryant Invitational

Smithfield, R.I. - Members of the Providence College Outdoor Track and Field teams battled wind, cold and a crowded field Saturday to impress at the Bryant Invitational. The Friar men and women competed against 15 other institutions from around the region, as well as club programs.
On the men's side, freshman Patrick Bowler (Westwood, Mass.) continues to impact the javelin competition. For the second time in a week, Bowler surpassed the BIG EAST qualifying standard. His throw of 55.56 meters bettered his debut performance Tuesday (also on the Bryant Track) of 55.46.
The track events were highlighted by the 5000-meters. Sophomore Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) took first place with a clocking of 15:23.79. Classmate Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) was second in 15:35.49.
In the 400-meters, freshman Nik Andrews closed in on the BIG EAST standard, falling just .43 seconds shy with a personal-best posting of 49.47. He was just ahead of teammates Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.; 50.72) and Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.; 50.97).
Freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) also performed well in his spring debut, completing the 800-meter run in 1:57.58. He crossed ahead of fellow Friars Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.; 2:00.39) and Chris Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.; 2:00.93).
On the women's side, sophomore Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) sailed to her fourth best measure in the triple jump, landing at 11.14 meters, just .14 meters shy of qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships.
Junior Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.) endured the wind in the 5000 to earn sixth place (18:23.47). Junior Meg Van Name (Stamford, Conn.) was eighth in the 400 (1:01.23).
Both sets of Friars will compete next Saturday at the Davis Invitational in Lowell, Mass.
