Men's Hockey Announces 2011 Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team announced its annual awards on Thursday, April 14 during the team's 2011 Awards Banquet held at Schneider Arena.

Seniors Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) and Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) shared the Lou Lamoriello Most Valuable Player Award as Lou Lamoriello was in attendance to present the honor. Sophomore Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) earned the Thomas Eccleston Jr. Unsung Hero Award, senior Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) received the Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player Award, and Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) earned the Rev. Herman Schneider Most Valuable Freshman Award. In addition, senior Ian O'Connor garnered the Gates Orlando Award for most points and the Mike Boback Award for most assists, MacKinnon earned the Rob Gaudreau Award for most goals, Germain received the Jay Leach Plus/Minus Award and junior Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) was the John Ferguson Team Academic Award winner.

MacKinnon finished his final season with a career-high 14 goals and added nine assists for 23 points. He led the team in goals and finished second in points. MacKinnon, who recorded his second career hat trick on November 12, also finished second on the team with three power-play goals. Germain totaled a career-high 10 goals this past season. He ranked second on the team in goals, fourth in assists (10) and third in points (20). Germain had five multiple-point games, including one goal and three assists on November 13 at Alabama-Huntsville. He also finished with a plus/minus rating of plus-three.

After recording four points as a freshman, Rooney tripled his scoring output as a sophomore, tallying 12 points on three goals and nine assists. He scored twice to help rally PC to a 3-3 overtime tie against Vermont. Rooney also scored a game-tying, short-handed goal as the Friars and ninth-ranked Maine played to a 3-3 overtime draw.

Baier led all Friar defensemen in scoring with a career-high five goals and 12 points, including two goals and one assist in a win over seventh-ranked Merrimack. He also totaled a career-high two power-play goals.

Army played in all 34 games and recorded 13 points on six goals and seven assists. He finished fifth on the team in goals and sixth in points. He also finished tied for third on the squad with two power-play goals.

O'Connor had a career season as he led the Friars with 24 points and 16 assists. He also totaled a career-best eight goals which was the third highest mark on the team. O'Connor recorded four multiple-point games, including a career-high three assists on November 12 at Alabama-Huntsville.

Balysky, an accounting major who finished with a 3.93 grade point average during the fall semester, played in 31 games. He recorded career highs in goals (5) assists (4) and points (9).
