TRACK AND FIELD KICKS OFF OUTDOOR SEASON

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Several members of the Providence College men's and women's track and field teams began the outdoor season Tuesday, turning in a number of quality performances in a tri meet with Stony Brook and host Bryant.
On the men's side, freshman Patrick Bowler (Westwood, Mass.) qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the javelin. Bowler launched a throw of 55.46 meters, easily winning his collegiate debut.
Three other Friars earned first place in their respective events. Senior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) grabbed top honors in the 200 with a posting of 22.79, a half a second faster than freshman teammate Gerry Briand (Bernardsville, N.J.; 23.31).
Freshman Nik Andrews took the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.10, roughly one second faster than junior Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.; 51.11). Meanwhile, senior Phil Connaughton (Broken Arrow, Okla.) grabbed first in the high jump, clearing 1.83 meters.
On the women's side, sophomore Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) continued where she left off in the winter season, claiming the triple jump with a leap of 11.00-meters, just .28 meters shy of the BIG EAST qualifying standard.
Sophomore Jennifer Bell (Weymouth, Mass.) made it a Friar sweep in the high jump, clearing 1.47-meters for the top spot. Senior Toni Rauseo (Kensington, Conn.) earned first place in the 200-meter dash with a posting of 26.91, after placing second in the 100 with a time of 13.24.
Friar senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) nabbed second in the 1500-meters (4:52.83), while freshman Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) was second in the 800 (2:19.47).
Both PC teams are scheduled to return to Smithfield on Saturday, April 2, with the Bryant University Invitational.
