BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams competed at Boston University's Valentine Invitational over the weekend. The black-and-white turned in several outstanding performances that included qualifying efforts for next weekend's BIG EAST Championships.
On the women's side, sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) led the way with a second place finish in the 3000-meters, clocking in at 9:14.06. The time was just 1.06 seconds off of the NCAA qualifying standard for banked tracks like BU's. Junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) also ran well, besting the BIG EAST'S 3000-meter qualifying standard by nearly eight seconds with a 9:52.32.
Elsewhere, Friar junior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) grabbed seventh in the mile run, crossing the tape in 4:47.48, shredding over ten seconds off her previous mile run last month.
On the men's side, junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) continues his strong indoor season, leaving BU with a sub-four minute mile to his credit. Matthews crossed in 3:58.57, good enough to qualify for NCAA's by .43 seconds.
Classmate and countryman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) earned third place in the 3000-meters with a posting of 8:08.08. The effort also earned a spot in the BIG EAST field. Freshman Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) crossed shortly after in 8:26.45.
Sophomore Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) was solid in the 800-meters, as his time of 1:55.44 missed BIG EAST qualifying by just two-tenths of a second.
Up next for members of both Friar teams is the Conference Championships, held this year in Akron, Ohio. Competition will take place on February 19 and 20.
