Shelby Greany Earns BIG EAST Title in 3,000m Steeplechase

CINCINNATI, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for the 2010 BIG EAST Championships at University of Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium. The men placed 13th after scoring 11 points. The women scored 14 points to place 15th.
The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday afternoon when freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) defeated all competitors to claim the BIG EAST title in the 3,000m steeplechase. Greany set a stadium record and qualified for the ECAC Championship with a time of 10:17.55. Greany is the first PC freshman to win a BIG EAST Championship since Marie McMahon ('98) won the 10,000m in 1995. Sophomore Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.) placed 14th in the steeplechase with a time of 11:17.25.
Junior Emma Perron (West Hartford, N.Y.) competed in the 1,500m, placing 12th of 26 competitors. Perron finished the preliminaries with a time of 4:28.61 and ran a time of 4:37.41 in the finals. In the women's 10,000m, Providence entered two runners. Senior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) placed 12th in 36:29 while sophomore Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) placed 14 in 37:03.55. Both athletes qualified for the ECAC Championship.
Providence had a pair of top-10 finishers in the women's 5,000m with graduate student Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) placing fifth and freshman Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) placing 10th. DiCamillo finished in 16:52.55 while Roecker ran a time of 17:13.20. Both athletes qualified for the ECAC Championship.
On the men's side, senior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) and sophomore Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the preliminaries of the 1,500m. In the finals, McLaren turned in a time of 3:57.74 to place fourth while Channon ran a time of 3:48.85 to place ninth. Both athletes qualified for the IC4A Championship with their times in the preliminaries.
Sophomore Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) placed seventh in the 800m. Matthews ran a time of 1:52.42 in the finals and qualified for the IC4A Championship with his time in the prelims.
In the men's 4x800m relay, the Friars placed fifth and qualified for the IC4A Championships. Matthews, McLaren, and Channon combined with Nikolas Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) to run a time of 7:30.43.
Up next for the men is the IC4A Championship while the women will compete at the ECAC Championship. Both events will take place from Friday-Sunday, May 14-16 at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.
