Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team (0-11, 0-3 BIG EAST) dropped a 14-7 contest to cross-town rival Brown University (6-5, 2-2 Ivy) on Tuesday, April 20 at the Bears' Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I. Sophomore midfielder Christopher Mahoney (Centerport, N.Y.) paced the Friars with a career-high two goals on the night while senior midfielder Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) added two points on a goal and an assist.

Brown posted the first goal of the contest and led 1-0 at the 13:47 mark of the first quarter. With 10:41 to play in the period, the Friars tied the score on a remarkable play. Sophomore goaltender Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.), seeing that Bears keeper Matt Chriss had left the Brown goal, lofted a shot over 50 yards that rolled into the net for a score. The goal marked the first point by a Friar goalie since Andrew McMinn recorded an assist on April 26, 2003 against Saint Joseph's.

The Bears responded with two-consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead with 14:42 to play in the second quarter. From there, freshman midfielder Daniel Textor (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) posted his first career-goal with 13:35 remaining in the period to pull the Friars within one at 3-2. Brown answered with four-straight goals to close the half and entered intermission holding a 7-2 advantage.

Providence opened the scoring in the third quarter on an unassisted goal by Mahoney to move back within four at 7-3. The Bears responded with a 4-0 run over the next 6:23 to take an 11-3 lead at the 7:08 mark of the third frame.

Less than a minute later, the Friars broke the Brown run and cut the lead to 11-4 on a goal by senior midfielder Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.) served up by fellow senior Colin Tigh. After a goal by Brown's Collins Carey (12-4) with 2:49 left in the third quarter, the Friars again answered the Bears on Mahoney's second score of the game, this time on an assist by sophomore midfielder Evan Olsen (Tampa, Fla.).

Another goal by Carey lifted Brown to a 13-5 advantage with 10:51 to go in the fourth quarter. Less than a minute later, another member of the Friar defense posted a goal, as senior defenseman Ryan Riedl (Winchester, Mass.) recorded his first score of the season and the third of his career to make the score 13-6 in favor of Brown.

A man-up goal by Tigh off an assist by sophomore midfielder Jake Nolan (Westport, Conn.) cut the Bears lead to 13-7 with 4:56 to go in the contest, but Brown's Reade Seligmann scored with 2:12 remaining in the game to secure the 14-7 win for the Bears.

The Friars won 16-of-24 face-offs in the contest, highlighted by an 8-for-10 performance by junior midfielder Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.). PC also held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls for the game.

Dzwilewski played the first 25:01 in net for the Friars, making one save while allowing six goals. He was replaced by senior Frank Cicero (Venetia, Pa.) who recorded four saves and allowed eight goals in the final 34:59.

Chriss earned the victory for Brown in goal, making nine saves while allowing seven goals in 60 minutes of action. Andrew Feinberg led the Bears offensively with five goals.

Providence returns to action against No. 1/1 Syracuse on Saturday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
