Jean O'Neill Named Hockey East Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's hockey junior forward Jean O'Neill (Strafford, Pa.) was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday, February 22. O'Neill led PC to a pair of victories over Vermont, finishing the weekend with three goals and two assists.

The Friars defeated UVM, 4-2, on Friday, February 19 as O'Neill notched two goals, including the game winner. On Saturday, Providence won, 5-2, to clinch the Hockey East regular season championship. O'Neill finished the game with a goal and two assists.

This marks O'Neill's third Hockey East award of the season. She was named Player of the Month for the month of January after leading Providence to a 7-2-1 record, finishing the month with 13 points on seven goals, which included two game-winners, and six assists. O'Neill registered nine points (4g, 5a) in four games against ranked teams including two goals and an assist in a 3-2 victory at No. 3 New Hampshire on January 16. She tallied an eight-game point streak from Jan. 3 to Jan. 29, which included three multi-point efforts during the streak. She was also named Player of the Week on January 18 after notching two goals and two assists in a pair of victories over No. 3 UNH.

On the season, O'Neill has set career highs with 13 goals, 16 assists and 29 points. She earned her 50th career point in the 4-2 victory over Vermont on Friday as well.

The Friars finished the regular season atop the standings and will now host the 2010 Hockey East Tournament in Schneider Arena on Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7. The Friars have a bye into the semifinals. The semifinals will be played on Saturday at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. The finals will be played on Sunday, March 7 at 12:30 p.m. The game will be televised on NESN.
