PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Lacrosse Head Coach Chris Burdick announced his team's schedule for the 2011 season on Thursday, November 11. The schedule will be highlighted by six BIG EAST Conference contests, including a game with Syracuse at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., home of the National Football League's New England Patriots. The Friars will open the 2011 season at Wagner on Saturday, February 26, in Staten Island, N.Y.
"We are very excited to face the challenge presented by the 2011 schedule which very well could be our toughest schedule to date," said Burdick.
The 2011 slate will include seven home contests to be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, with the home-opener coming on Sunday, March 6, against Presbyterian. The home schedule wraps-up on Saturday, April 23, with a BIG EAST game against 2010 NCAA finalist Notre Dame.
The Syracuse game on Saturday, April 16, at Gillette Stadium will be a part of the New England Face Off Classic, hosted by Providence College. The Friars and Orange will meet at 4:00 p.m. before an Ivy League match-up of Dartmouth and Princeton at 6:30 p.m.
The BIG EAST Conference sponsors men's lacrosse for just the second season in 2011. The league proved to be among the best in the country in its inaugural season in 2010, as two teams reached the NCAA Tournament. Perennial power Syracuse won the league and was the two-seed in the 16-team NCAA Tournament, while Notre Dame made a run to the national title game.
The conference slate sees each team play three home games and three road games. This season, the Friars will host St. John's (April 9) and Notre Dame (April 23), while playing their home game with Syracuse at Gillette Stadium (April 16). Providence will travel to Georgetown (March 19), Villanova (April 30) and Rutgers (May 7). In non-conference play, the Friars will play six home games against Presbyterian (March 6), Quinnipiac (March 12), Massachusetts (March 15), Siena (March 26), Lafayette (April 2) and Brown (April 19). The road portion of the schedule will see trips to Wagner (February 26), Bryant (March 22) and Yale (April 5).
