Men's Lacrosse Downs Wagner, 12-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Wagner, 12-3, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action onWednesday, April 23 in Providence, R.I. Graduate student Bennett Murphy (Princeton, N.J.) paced the Friar offense with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while goalkeepers Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) and Frank Cicero (Venetia, Pa.) combined for 11 saves. Brian Poissant led Wagner with two goals and Sean Travis recorded two assists. Evan Shull netted the third Seahawk goal.

Providence got out to a 2-0 lead with 8:31 left in the first quarter as graduate student Mark Dillon (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) each recorded goals off a pair of assists from senior Robert Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.). Wagner answered with two-straight goals to make the score, 2-2, as Shull and Poissant found the back of the cage. Murphy put the Friars ahead, 3-2, with seven seconds left on the clock in the first off a feed from defenseman Dylan Cox (Newbury, Mass.). It marked the first collegiate point of Cox's career.

The Friars dominated the second quarter with five unanswered goals. Sophomore Garrett Kanter (Marblehead, Mass.) led off the scoring when he intercepted a pass in front of the cage and slipped the ball into the back of the cage at the 11:14 mark. Sophomore Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.) then connected off a feed from Murphy during a man-up situation to make the score 5-2 with 10:19 on the clock. At the 8:00-minute mark, senior Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal. Junior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) followed with back-to-back goals at the 3:21 mark and again with eight seconds left. Both goals were unassisted and gave the Friars an 8-2 advantage going into halftime.

Murphy scored the only goal of the third quarter to put PC ahead, 9-2, with 6:07 showing on the clock. His goal was assisted by graduate student Henry Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.).

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Dan Daly (West Hartford, Conn.) registered his first collegiate goal off a feed from Murphy with 13:27 left in the game during a man-up situation. Lamontagne followed with a man-up goal of his own at 11:36, assisted by Pynchon to make the score 11-2. Murphy capped off his three-goal evening, unassisted, with 7:56 remaining on the clock. Wagner got back on the board with 3:04 left and marked the game's final goal. Poissant tallied the goal and the assist was credited to Travis, making final score, 12-3, in favor of Providence.

Bryan posted seven saves and allowed two goals for the Friars in 45 minutes of action. Cicero played the final 15 minutes and recorded four saves on the night and allowed one goal. Matthew McVie played 59:05 in the cage for Wagner, allowed 11 goals and made seven saves. Brandon Waszak entered the game for 55 seconds during a penalty, which was incurred by McVie. Waszak allowed one goal.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, April 26 against MAAC foe Canisius at 11:00 a.m. in Buffalo, N.Y. The Friars enter the game with a 6-1 record in the MAAC, while Canisius stands at 7-0. Should the Friars earn a victory vs. the Griffs, Providence and Canisius would share the MAAC regular-season title. A win also would award Providence the No. 1 seed in the four-team MAAC Tournament, scheduled for May 2 and May 4 in Loundonville, N.Y.
