PROVIDENCE R.I. -- It was announced that Providence College women's ice hockey forward Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) has been chosen to be the recipient of the 2005-06 Sarah Devens Award, which is an annual honor presented to the player that best demonstrates leadership and commitment both on and off the ice. The award is named in honor of former Dartmouth tri-sport captain Sarah Devens, who died tragically in 1995 just prior to her senior year. All female student-athletes in HOCKEY EAST and the ECACHL are eligible for this award which now carries a $10,000 educational grant for the winner. In addition to the Sarah Devens Award, Thatcher was also named to the NEHW All-Star team for the second straight year.
Thatcher, a top-10 Patty Kazmaier Finalist, led the team in scoring for the second straight season with 47 points on 18 goals and 29 assists. For her efforts she was named a 2005-06 All-American, earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Year runner-up honors and was named a league First Team All-Star for the second straight season. Off the ice, Thatcher's accomplishments continued as she demonstrated academia excellence with a 3.85 cumulative GPA as a Biology major.
Thatcher finished her record-breaking career with 167 points in 132 games played, as she had a hand in PC's Hockey East Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005. Thatcher leaves her legacy as 10th best in career points.
Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) will be honored as well as she was named to the New England Hockey Writers' Division I All-Star Team. Gigliotti, a 2005-06 All-American, led the nation's defenders in scoring with 33 points on 15 goals and 18 assists. Her versatile play earned her HOCKEY EAST Second Team All-Star honors.
Thatcher and Gigliotti will be recognized at the New England Hockey Writers' Banquet this Thursday, April 13, at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass.
