AMHERST, MASS. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 decision to Albany on Sunday, March 6 at Garber Field in Amherst, Mass. Merrick Thomson scored four goals, including the eventual game-winner, and posted one assist in the Great Dane victory. Senior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Henry Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.) connected on two goals each to lead the Providence effort.

The two teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Albany out-gunned Providence in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. Thomson and Frank Resetarits each scored two goals in the quarter for Albany. Chris Martocchia and Luke Daquino were credited with one goal apiece. Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.) and senior Sean Kirwan (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored for Providence.

The Friars tallied the first two goals of the third quarter to make the score, 6-4. Giuntini scored, unassisted, at the 12:32 mark. Sophomore Mark Dillon (Gaithersburg, Md.) added the second goal with 6:09 left on the clock. The Great Danes answered with two goals of their own in the quarter to increase their lead to 8-4. Thomson found the back of the cage on an assist from Jordan Levine at the 5:04 mark, followed by a goal from Resetarits at 4:01. The assist was credited to Daquino.

Providence opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals and trailed by just one at 8-7. Senior Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored, unassisted, at 12:26. Pynchon and Giuntini followed with unassisted goals at the 11:07 and 9:46 marks, respectively.

Albany pushed its lead back to three goals (10-7) with two-straight goals. Thomson struck for his fourth goal of the game at the 9:26 mark on an assist from Daquino. Chris Martocchia netted his second goal of the afternoon at the 5:24 mark, unassisted.

Providence's rally fell short, as it scored just one more goal to make the final 10-8. Sophomore Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) found the back of the net with 4:40 remaining off an assist from Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.).

PC goalkeeper Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made eight saves in the cage. Albany goalie Kevin Rae also collected eight saves for his first win of the year.

Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) won 13 of 20 face-off opportunities in the game, including 10 of 12 in the second half.
