Providence, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney announced team captains for the 2005-06 season on Thursday, October 13, as voted by the team. Goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) and forward Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) were tabbed team captains, while junior defenseman Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) was selected as assistant captain.

Bugden did not play during the 2004-05 season due to injury. During the 2003-04 season, she led the Friars to their second straight HOCKEY EAST title. She started in 27 of 28 games and finished the season with a 13-12-2 record and a .904 save percentage. She ranked 13th in the nation that season with a 2.22 goals against average.

Thatcher, the 2004-05 HOCKEY EAST Player of the Year, led the team with 58 points (25 goals, 33 assists). She finished sixth in the nation in power-play goals (13), seventh in assists per game (1.06) and ninth in points per game (1.87). Her 58 points tied her for 13th place with Kathy Lenahan (1979-80) on PC's all-time single season points list. Thatcher also was named the 2005 New England Hockey Journal Hockey East Player of the Year and HOCKEY EAST First Team All-Star unanimous pick. Most recently, she was named to the Women's Division I Preseason All-USCHO Second Team.

Gigliotti appeared in all 37 games for the Friars last season. As a sophomore, she tallied a career-high 23 points on six goals and 17 assists. She netted the game-winner versus Connecticut in the 2005 HOCKEY EAST Championship game on March 14. For her efforts, she was named to the HOCKEY EAST All-Tournament Team.

"Most importantly, our captains need to lead by example," Deraney said. "They understand the role of `do as I do not as I say'. I think that we can go a long way with that mentality. Our captains, I am sure, will lead by example and let their actions do the talking for them."

The Friars open the regular season on the road versus Connecticut on Saturday, October 15 at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn. at 2:00 p.m.
