PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated VMI, 8-4, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Saturday, April 24 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 6-6 overall and 5-2 in the MAAC, while the Keydets fall to 0-10 overall (0-7 MAAC).

Junior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Friars with three points on two goals and one assist. He also was credited with the eventual game-winning goal at the 13:23 mark of the third quarter, unassisted, in a man-up situation. Giuntini's two goals on the day moves him into a tie for 15th place on the all-time goals scored list at Providence with 56 career tallies. He is currently tied with Mike Kirkwood, who is a 1987 graduate of the College.

Sophomore Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) started the scoring for PC at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter on an assist from Giuntini. One minute later, Giuntini scored his first goal of the game to give PC a 2-0 lead off a pass from senior Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.). The goal was a man-up goal with 2:06 remaining in the quarter.

The Friars held VMI scoreless once again in the second quarter and scored two more goals to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) tallied the first of PC's two goals in the quarter, man-up, at the 10:42 mark. Ryan's goal was unassisted. Freshman Carlo Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa.) then tallied an unassisted goal with 4:10 remaining in the first half of play.

Giuntini opened the third quarter with a man-up goal at the 13:23 mark, unassisted. Kornobis put PC ahead, 6-0, on another man-up goal with 10:39 on the clock. Senior Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.

VMI netted its first goal of the game with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter. Joe Picariello was credited with the goal, man-up, off a feed from Robert Trimble. Providence opened the fourth quarter with two-straight goals to take a 8-1 lead. Sophomore Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) connected at the 10:04 mark off an assist from Sunseri, followed by a goal from Jonathan Hollister with 6:26 remaining in the game. Kelly earned the assist for PC.

The Keydets closed out the game with three unanswered goals in the final 2:12 of action. Matt Dixson tallied a man-up goal off a pass from Picariello at the 2:12 mark. Trimble followed with an unassisted goal with 1:43 remaining on the clock. Just 29 seconds later, Picariello netted his second goal of the afternoon to make the final, 8-4.

In goal, junior Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win with 10 saves. Kelley DeNeen took the loss for VMI and made nine saves between the pipes. Junior Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.) won 10-of-13 face offs and picked up a game-high seven groundballs in the win.

Providence (6-6, 5-2 MAAC) will return to action on Tuesday, April 27 against crosstown rival Brown in a non-conference match-up. The game will be played at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
