PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney announced on Thursday, December 9, 2004 that seven student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to attend Providence College, beginning in September 2005. The seven players include forward Katy Beach (Middleburg Heights, Ohio), goaltender Stacey Scott (Massena, N.Y.), forward Stephanie Morris (South Burlington, Vt.), defender/forward Brittney Lomond (Dorchester, Mass.), forward Maura Grainger (Ithaca, N.Y.), defender Meredith George (Westwood, Mass.) and defender/forward Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario).
Beach is a 5-foot-5-inch forward who is currently playing for the Ohio Flames Girls Hockey organization and attending Gilmour Academy. In high school, Beach has participated in multiple sports as she lettered in track and field, volleyball and softball. "Katie possesses a tremendous amount of speed and skill," Deraney said. "She has terrific hockey sense and vision on the ice."
Scott is a 6-foot goaltender who will provide a presence in the net. Scott currently plays at the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vermont and previously played for the NWHL's Ottawa Raiders. "She has a lot of raw ability and a great amount of potential." Deraney stated. "With the addition of Stacey, we have solidified our goaltending well into the future."
Morris is a 5-foot-8-inch forward who also attends the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vermont. "Stephanie is a terrific two-way forward who will bring skill, size and speed to our program," Deraney said. "We feel Stephanie will play a lot of different roles for us and will really excel in our environment."
Lomond is a 5-foot-3-inch defender/forward who plays for Assabet Valley U-19 Red team. Lomond attends Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass. where she is coached by former Friar and Olympian Laurie Baker Mutch. "Brittany is a high energy player who plays forward and defense," said Deraney. "We will look for her to play and contribute to our team as a forward. She has very good speed, is a hard worker and makes things happen when she's on the ice."
Grainger is a 5-foot-7-inch forward who plays at Ithaca High School. She is another incoming multi-sport athlete who lettered in soccer all four years and led her lacrosse team to a sectional championship as a junior. Deraney stated, "Maura is a very skilled forward who always has the puck, which is a sign of a great player. She has tremendous hockey sense, vision and is a point-producer."
George is a 5-foot-6-inch left shot defender. George comes to Providence by way of Cushing Academy. "Meredith will bring a lot of confidence to our program," Deraney stated. "She's a solid defensive defenseman who will help us solidify our defensive core."
Normore is a 5-foot-6-inch defender/forward who hails from Cambridge, Ontario and plays for the Cambridge Fury. Normore is a five-sport athlete. In addition to hockey, she excels in volleyball, badminton, basketball, and soccer. Normore is a very good defender, but will be looked upon to excel on the offensive side of the puck. "Erin can play both forward and defense and can produce points from both positions," Deraney stated. "Not only is she a goal-scorer but a play-maker that has the ability to make everyone around her better."
Coach Deraney is excited about what the seven players will bring to the Friars next season. "They all possess very good hockey ability and are terrific multi-sport athletes who have a tremendous amount of character. We are excited to welcome them and their families into our family," Deraney stated.
