PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 10, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team opened their season with a 6-0 victory over the Bluewater Junior Hawks on Sunday, October 10 at the PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars were led by junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) who completed the game with a natural hat-trick, scoring three consecutive goals.
Senior Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.) scored the first goal on an assist from Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) in the first 27 seconds of the first period. Sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished the game with two goals and one assist, while senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored one goal and had three assists.
Providence held the shot advantage 47-10, and went 3-10 on the power play.
The Hawks starting goaltender Danielle Le Ber posted 22 saves, while teammate Krystin Gander recored 18. Senior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) captured three saves earning the victory, while sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.) posted seven saves.
Providence opens up their regular season on the road versus Colgate in non-conference action on Saturday, October 16, in Hamilton, N.Y.
