STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Wagner, 9-5, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday, April 19 in Staten Island, N.Y. Senior Skip Dunphy led the Friar attack with two goals and two assists. The win helps PC improve to 6-7 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC.
The Friars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as Dunphy, junior Ryan Russell and senior Jon Meehan scored one goal each. Providence increased its lead to 4-0 in the second quarter as sophomore John Hollister netted a goal at the 11:20 mark.
Wagner finally got on the scoreboard with two straight goals at the 3:14 mark and the 2:26 mark of the second quarter to make the score 4-2. PC would close out the first half with one more goal by freshman Tom Kelly with just 56 seconds on the clock, giving the Friars a 5-2 advantage.
Providence opened the third quarter with another goal by Hollister at the 13:23 mark to make the score 6-2. Wagner answered with a goal from Jared Jax with 12:12 showing on the clock to cut the deficit to three goals (6-3). PC's Mark Seyer put the Friars back up by four (7-3) with 1:15 remaining in the third.
The Friars earned their largest lead of the day (8-3) as junior David Krasnica connected just 46 seconds into the fourth quarter. Wagner's Michael Coleman made the score 8-4 on a tally at 8:54, but PC would counter once again at the 7:30 mark as Dunphy registered his second goal of the day. The Friars would be held scoreless the remainder of the game, while Wagner picked up its fifth and final goal of the day with six seconds left in the game. Zalauf was credited with the goal.
Sophomore Andrew McMinn faced 18 Wagner shots in goal and made five saves. Chris Sochacki made six saves for Wagner in the loss on 25 PC shots.
