PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Marist, 6-3, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday, April 12 on Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Red Foxes fall to 2-9, with a 2-4 record in the MAAC, while the Friars improve to 4-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Marist took an early 2-0 lead with 3:16 to play in the first quarter, on goals by Josh Ben-Eliyahu and Billy Duerr.
Providence responded with five unanswered goals, two of them coming by junior Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.), to take a 5-2 lead with 13:59 to play in the game.
The Red Foxes tried to mount a comeback as Duerr scored again with 9:16 to play in regulation, but Providence was able to hold on as sophomore Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored off a pass from senior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) to seal the victory and remain undefeated in MAAC play.
Duerr led Marist with two goals, while Ben-Eliyahu had the other goal. Pat Van Horne had an assist in the game for the Red Foxes.
Bosco had two goals and an assist for Providence, while Russell also tallied a pair of goals. John Hollister and Dunphy each had a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also had a strong day in goal, collecting 12 saves. Bobby Gross recorded 11 saves for Marist in goal.
The Friars return to action on Monday, April 14 against Mount St. Mary's in MAAC action. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
