Men's Lacrosse Drops 10-6 Decision To Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Fairfield, 10-6, in non-conference action on Sunday, March 23 in Providence, R.I. PC sophomore David Krasnica (Mendham, N.J.) led the Friar effort with three goals. Justin Geluso led Fairfield with a game-high four points on three goals and one assist.

Fairfield got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Troy Bamann (11:56) and Geluso (4:06). Bamann connected on an assist from Matt Baglio, while Matt Buecker was credited with an assist on Geluso's goal. The Friars held the Stags scoreless the remainder of the quarter, while evening the score at 2-2. Sophomore John Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded PC's first goal off an assist from sophomore Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) with 2:56 remaining in the first. Krasnica tied the game (2-2) at the 1:53 mark off an assist from sophomore Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.).

In the second quarter, Providence scored first to take a 3-2 lead as Krasnica connected on his second goal of the game with 8:46 on the clock. Hollister was credited with the assist. The Stags rallied to score two-straight goals with under a minute remaining in the first half of play to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Baglio scored unassisted with 56 seconds remaining, followed by Geluso from Buecker with 27 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Friars tied the scored (4-4) at the 7:43 mark of the third quarter as Krasnica connected on his third and final goal of the day off a pass from freshman Tom Ingle (Charlton, Mass.). Fairfield's Troy Bamann helped the Stags regain the lead (5-4) as he connected on a goal with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter off an assist from Kevin Finnerty. The Stags then delivered a back-breaking goal with one second remaining in the quarter as AJ Califano netted a goal off of a pass from Rory McCarthy to make the score 6-4.

Fairfield opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with two-straight goals at the 14:09 mark and the 10:23 mark. Geluso struck first with his third goal of the game, followed by McCarthy who connected off of an assist from Geluso. McCarthy's goal gave the Stags a 8-4 lead. The Friars rallied to make the score 8-6 with two-straight goals from senior Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.) and Giuntini with 5:52 and 3:48 on the showing clock, respectively. Bosco and junior Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) were credited with the assists. Fairfield closed out the scoring with two goals to earn the 10-6 victory. Both goals were scored with under a minute left in regulation. Buecker netted an unassisted goal with 31 seconds on the clock, followed by a Garrett Bamann tally which was assisted by Pete Vlahakis with 23 seconds left.

Providence goalkeeper Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took the loss in goal. McMinn allowed 10 goals and made five saves in 60:00 minutes of action. CJ Kemp earned the victory in goal for the Stags with 11 saves and just six goals against in 60:00 minutes.

Providence (1-2, 1-0 MAAC) will return to action on Saturday, March 15 against Mount St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
