The 2003-04 women's hockey team will look to continue where it left off last season. The Friars capped off the 2002-03 season with a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked New Hampshire in the inaugural HOCKEY EAST Championship game to win the school's eighth league title and second in a row. Despite their past success, the goal for the Friars remains the same - improve, capture the conference title, and reach the NCAA Frozen Four.
Head Coach Bob Deraney enters his fifth season at the helm of the women's ice hockey program at Providence College. In his four seasons at Providence, Deraney has continued the level of excellence that the hockey program has experienced over the last 29 seasons. The Friars lost three seniors from last season's team to graduation, but welcome six newcomers who will add more talent to an already skilled and committed squad. The Friars will be led this season by senior captains Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) and Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.). Fellow senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) will be the Friars' assistant captain.
Providence is ranked fifth in both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine preseason Top-10 polls. The Friars will play a total of 11 games against six teams that are ranked in the pre-season Top-10. Providence was picked to finish first overall for the second straight year in the HOCKEY EAST preseason coaches' poll.
On Saturday, October 11 Providence will play an exhibition game against one of the oldest teams in all of women's hockey, the McGill University Martlets, who were founded in 1894. The Martlets finished last season with a 30-6-3 record overall, outscoring opponents 162-51. McGill finished atop the Quebec Student Sports Federation conference standings for the first time in its history. Last year was the fourth time in five seasons that the Martlets have finished over the .500 mark after only one season over .500 in the previous 26 years.
The Martlets have played four exhibition games thus far and have compiled a 1-1-2 record. In the Queen's Cross-Boarder Tournament they defeated York University, 4-0, and lost to Queen's University, 2-1. Their two ties came against the College of St. Laurent and the NWHL's Quebec Avalanche by the score of 2-2.
Providence opens its regular season on the road against the University of Vermont and St. Lawrence University on October 18 and 19 before returning home to start the defense of their HOCKEY EAST title on Thursday, October 23 against Northeastern at 7:00 p.m.
