Women's Ice Hockey Defeats McGill, 7-0

The Providence College women's ice hockey team opened their season with a, 7-0, victory in their exhibition game against the McGill University Martlets on Saturday, October 11 at Schneider Arena.

Senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) opened up the scoring at 6:31 of the first period when she beat goaltender Kalie Townsend on an assist from junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.). Sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) scored the next two goals on assists from junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and sophomore Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.). Payton scored her first goal of the day at 18:01 of the second period after receiving a pass from junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) and Halcisak. Freshmen Kristen Porter (Ayer, Mass.) and Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored the fifth and sixth goals of the day at 18:01 of the second and 7:51 of the third period. Halcisak scored her second goal of the day and collected her third point as she closed out the scoring at 14:35 of the third as Zimmerman picked up her third assist.

Sophomore Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) started the game in net for the Friars and made 11 saves. Bugden was replaced at the start of the second by senior Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) who made six saves to keep the Martlets off the board. Junior Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) took over for Quinlan at the start of the third and saved the shutout for Providence making five saves.

The Friars start their regular season schedule next Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19 at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Vermont and St. Lawrence.
