EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced it's selections for the 2002 MAAC Preseason Team on March 13, 2002, in Edison, New Jersey.
Sophomore Brian O'Rorke (Montclair, N.J.) and senior Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) were selected to the 2002 MAAC Preseason Team. O'Rorke, the 2001 MAAC Rookie of the Year, was selected as a defender. Ojakian, who became the first PC player to be named to the All-MAAC Team in 2001, was selected as a midfielder.
O'Rorke, considered the team's best take-away man, finished the 2001 season with 41 groundballs and appeared in all 16 of the Friars' games as a freshman.
Ojakian finished the 2001 regular season first on the team in assists (39) and points (47). He also ranked seventh in goals (8). He ranked first in the nation among NCAA Division I players in assists per game with 2.79. Ojakian set the single-season assist record at Providence during the final regular-season game of the 2001 season against Siena. He is 13th all-time at PC in career-assists, after just one season. Ojakian spent two years at Dean College before transferring to Providence in the fall of 2000. At Dean, he set the single-season assist record with 55 in 2000 and ranks first all-time in career assists with 85. He attended Cheshire High School and is the son of Jacki and Mark Ojakian.
The Friars are currently 1-2 overall through three games on the 2002 schedule. PC has been picked to finish third in the MAAC team standings, according to a preseason poll voted on by the league's head coaches. Mount St. Mary's, the 2001 MAAC Champion, is picked to finish first. St. Joseph's (Pa.) is picked to finish second in the standings. Manhattan (fourth), Canisius (fifth), Marist (sixth), Siena (seventh) and Wagner (eighth) round out the remainder of the preseason spots.
In upcoming action, Providence will host Vermont on Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played on Glay Field.
