Women's Ice Hockey Players Recognized For Academic Achievement

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced its selections for the ECAC Division I Women's Ice Hockey All-Academic Team. The announcement was made on Thursday, March 15.

Seventy-three student-athletes, representing thirteen colleges and universities were eligible for recognition, including seven players from Providence College.

Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.), Erin Cannon (Potsdam, N.Y.), Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.), Angela Hill (Pascoag, R.I.), Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.), Christa Talbot (Lake Forest, Calif.), Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) and Holley Tyng (East Orleans, Mass.) were honored for their achievements in the classroom and on the ice.

To be named to the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumlative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale and have competed in at least one-half of her team's contests during the current season.

Butsch, a sophomore, finished fourth on the team in scoring this season with 19 points on 10 goals and nine assists. She is a Social Science major and has earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.21.

Cannon scored four points on one goal and three assists in her final season at Providence. She has a 3.00 GPA as an Education major.

Culgin has a 3.13 grade-point average and is currently undeclared academically. The sophomore scored eight goals and handed out four assists for 12 points.

Hill, a transfer from the University of Maine, scored one goal and registered six assists for seven points as a defender. She is a history major and holds a 3.26 GPA.

Ruzzi, a sophomore defender, scored eight points on one goal and seven assists. She is majoring in Finance with a 3.46 grade-point average.

Talbot, an Economic major, has earned a 3.25 GPA in the classroom over her three years. Talbot handed out five assists for five points as a defender.

Tamsin was sixth in scoring for Providence this season with six goals and nine assists for 15 points. She has a cumlative grade-point average of 3.24 in Finance.

Tyng rounds out the list of Providence honorees with a 3.05 grade-point average in Mathematics. As a defender, she scored seven points on one goal and six assists in her final season.

Providence finished the year with an 18-14-3 record, including a 10-11-3 mark and seventh-place finish in ECAC action. The Friars ended their season on March 10th, with a 4-3 overtime loss to second-seeded Harvard, in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC playoffs.
