CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Providence men's lacrosse team lost a 9-8 overtime thriller to Airforce on Monday morning in Cambridge, Mass. The game, originally scheduled as the Friar's home opener, was moved to Harvard because of poor playing conditions.
PC started the game with a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter, and extended its lead to 5-3 in the second quarter, before Airforce outscored the Friars 4-2 in the third to tie the game at 7-7. Friar midfielder Kyle Ojakian scored his first three goals of the season and registered two assists in that span to lead the Friars. Kyle Warf and J. Agnew combined for five goals and two assists through three quarters to lead the Falcons.
In the final quarter of regulation Chris Houston scored his third goal of the season to put the Friars up 8-7 with 4:27 remaining in the game. Forty-seven seconds later (3:40) Alex DeManss scored his second goal of the game to tie things up at eight goals a piece and force the extra session.
Eric Lederer scored the game-winning goal for Airforce with 1:46 remaining in the overtime period for the sudden-death victory. The Falcons raised their record to 2-4 on the year, while Providence falls to 0-4. Friar goalkeeper John Farley made a season-high 25 saves in the net. Falcon netminders, Jeff Moss and Bill Arnold shared the goalkeeping responsibilities, and combined for six saves.
PC will host St. Joseph's on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. on Glay Field.
