PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Three former Providence College runners will compete in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia later this month. Former Friars Amy Rudolph (Kane, Pa.), Sinead Delahunty (Kilkenny, Ireland) and Mark Carroll (Cork, Ireland) all have qualified for this year's Summer Games. It will mark the sixth consecutive Summer Olympic Games that one or more former Providence College runners has competed.

Rudolph, a 10-time All-American at PC, will run the 5,000 meters. The preliminaries will be held on September 22 and the finals will take place on September 25. Rudolph, who ran the 5,000 meters at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Ga., is a former American record holder at that distance. At the U.S. Olympic Trials in July, she won her preliminary heat in a time of 15:37.65 and finished fourth in the finals (15:21.16). Although only the top three runners qualify for the Games, Rudolph was selected when Deena Drossin committed to compete in the 10,000 meters rather than run the 5,000.

Delahunty also is making her second appearance at the Olympic Games. She will run the 1,500 meters at Sydney. The first round of the 1,500 meters will be on September 27 and the finals will take place on September 30. The former six-time All-American made her first Olympic appearance in 1996 when she ran the 1,500 meters at the Atlanta Games. Delahunty qualified for this year's Games by running under the Olympic "A" standard time (4:08.00) in August in Barcelona, Spain. Delahunty's time of 4:05.28 at Barcelona was her best 1,500 meter time since running a personal best of 4:02.22 in Brussels, Belgium last year.

Carroll will be competing in his first Olympics this month. The 1995 PC graduate qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Games but could not run due to an injury. Carroll, a six-time All-American and 1995 NCAA Indoor 5,000 meter champion, will run the 5,000 on September 27 in Sydney. The finals will be held on September 30. He met the Olympic "A" qualifying standard in the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. He only will run the 5,000 at this year's Games.

Nine former Providence College runners have competed in the last five Summer Olympic Games. In 1984, John Treacy became the first Providence College athlete to earn a medal when he captured the Silver Medal in the marathon.
