PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College went on a 3-0 run in the fourth quarter but fell short in the end as they lost their first game of the season to the University of Denver, 8-7, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday, March 25 at Providence, R.I.
Denver took a 5-2 lead at the half, with Chad Wittman scoring a hat trick in the first 30 minutes of play for the Pioneers. Geoff Bieging netted Denver's first goal at the 8:37 mark, unassisted. Law scored the next two goals, with help from Chad Wittman and Mike Kenlay, respectively. Bieging knocked in another unassisted goal, and Law followed up with his own goal less than a minute later off a pass from Kris Ferrari to round out the first half scoring tally for Denver.
Providence got on the board first, however, as Chris Houston put in a shot from Ken Leahy with just under 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Steve Heo then netted an unassisted goal early in the second quarter.
After halftime, the Friars came out with Houston scoring the first goal of the third quarter (12:21). Denver responded with two more unassisted goals from Wittman and McAdory Lipscomb. Houston then scored an unassisted goal with three minutes left in the quarter, but the Pioneers' Bieging put Denver on the board again with a pass from Law at the 1:27 mark.
Providence then attempted a rally as Houston scored his fourth goal of the day, assisted by Leahy, with 12 minutes remaining. The pair then reversed roles, as Leahy put in a pass from Houston a minute later. PC then trailed by only one at the 4:32 mark as Leahy netted a pass from Jeff Merklinger. The Friars had one more attempt to score with two minutes remaining, but Jim Dooley was called out of bounds after retrieving a pass, and Denver held possession until time ran out.
With the victory, Denver improved to 6-2 overall, while Providence fell to 5-1 overall.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, March 29 at Hartford at 3:30 p.m.
