PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Assistant Vice President for Athletics John Marinatto today announced the appointment of Tom Sheehan of West Warwick, Rhode Island as interim head coach for the women's ice hockey team. Sheehan replaces Jackie Barto who resigned to become the head coach of the women's ice hockey team at Ohio State.

Sheehan, who graduated from Providence in 1972, has strong ties to Providence College hockey. He played hockey for four seasons at Providence and was coached by Friar legend Lou Lamoriello. Sheehan's older brother, Dan, played hockey for four seasons at Providence before graduating in 1965. Also, his son, Tom, Jr., graduated from Providence in 1997 and helped the Friars capture the 1996 HOCKEY EAST Championship.

A native of Warwick, Rhode Island, Sheehan was the head coach of the boy's hockey team at his high school alma mater LaSalle Academy in Providence from 1986-96.

"I'm excited to return to PC and have the opportunity to coach the women's hockey team," Sheehan said. "I want to help the women's team to continue as one of the top programs in college hockey and challenge for the ECAC title this season."

Sheehan and his wife, Pamela, reside in West Warwick. They have two children, Tom and Theresa.

Providence, which has a 9-3-2 overall mark and a 8-3-2 record in ECAC play, is in fifth place in league standings. The Friars will return to action on January 15 against the University of Toronto at Lake Placid, N.Y.
