PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On Friday, November 2, Providence College President Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P. introduced the College's new Athletic Director Robert Driscoll, Jr., at a press conference in Mullaney Gym in Alumni Hall. Father Smith, Driscoll and David Duffy, current chairman of the Providence College President's Council and chair of the search committee, addressed a crowd of more than 100 people and answered questions from the media.
Father Smith opened the press conference with some remarks about the new athletic director. "We wanted to hire someone who shared beliefs in the commitment to academics and our insistence that athletics be incorporated into the academic profile," Father Smith said. "We conducted a national search for this position. Bob Driscoll's name as a successful athletic director, a skilled fund-raiser and an outstanding manager was at the top of everyone's list. When I met him I realized that he surpassed all my expectations. We have signed Bob Driscoll to a five-year contract beginning on January 1, 2002. In Bob Driscoll, we believe we have found a good fit for the specific needs and challenges of Providence College now and in the future."
Driscoll, who comes to Providence College with 26 years of management experience in intercollegiate athletics, has spent the last 14 years at the University of California-Berkeley, serving as the associate director for varsity sports programs and students services, executive associate athletic director, director of athletic administration/sports, and acting executive director of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports.
While speaking to the crowd, Driscoll noted that he was excited to become part of the Providence College Athletic Department. "It's a great day to be a Friar," Driscoll stated. "I wanted to come to a place where I could feel like part of a family. Some of the greatest names in athletics have come through this College and I wanted to be part of it. In addition to the tradition, there is an excellent balance between academics and athletics at Providence College! I hope to be able to add to that legacy over my five years. My role will be to help define more clearly what the vision of this institution will be. I'm hoping that in a collaborative way we can come up with a vision for this department that is student-athlete driven."
