Ryan Bell named Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and Richie Joseph named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST announced on Thursday, January 23 that Providence College men's lacrosse player Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The league also announced Bell and Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, N.Y.) were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Bell, as a junior, led the Friars in scoring last year with 66 points on 21 goals and a team-best 45 assists. Bell set the program's single-season points record (66) and assists record (45). He finished the regular season ranked third among NCAA Division I players in assists per game, averaging 3.00. He was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, All-BIG EAST First Team, NEILA All-New England Second Team, USA Lacrosse Magazine Honorable Mention All-American and USILA Honorable Mention All-American. Bell ranks fourth in scoring all-time scoring (179) at Providence and leads the Friars in all-time assists (119). Additionally, Bell was named to the USA Lacrosse Preseason All-American Third Team for the upcoming season.
Joseph, as a sophomore, finished first on the team in goals (41) and man-up goals (five) and second on the team in points (53). His 41 goals and 53 points marked single-season career highs. He also added 12 assists. Joseph was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and was selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
The Friars also were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Providence kicks off its season at home against Holy Cross on Saturday, February 1 at 12:00 p.m.
