PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College Volleyball defeated Columbia in four sets (3-1) to close out the first day of the 19
th Annual Friar Classic at Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 25-21 victory in the first set.
- The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a tie score of 9-9 to begin the set.
- Columbia went on a 4-1 to bring the score to 13-10 and forced Providence to call its first timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout the Lions were able to extend their lead to 16-12.
- The Friars went on a 9-3 rally to take the lead 21-19.
- Providence was able to maintain its lead and win the set 25-21.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Columbia won the second set, 25-21.
- Providence jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead to begin the set.
- Columbia went on a 5-2 run to tie the match 7-7.
- The Lions went on 5-3 run to take a 15-12 advantage.
- Providence fought back to close the score to 17-16, prompting Columbia to call a timeout.
- The Friars used a strong 4-1 run to take 20-18 lead.
- Columbia went on a 7-1 scoring run to win the set 25-21.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-13.
- The two teams went back and forth to start the set, with the score tied at 4-4.
- Providence went on a 6-2 run to take a 10-6 advantage.
- The Friars extend their lead to 18-10.
- Providence ended the set on a 7-3 run to win 25-13.
- Kayla Grant led the Friars with nine kills through three sets.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fourth set, 25-19 to win the match, 3-1.
- Columbia got out to quick 3-1 lead to begin set four.
- Providence came back to tie the set 4-4.
- The two teams played evenly through the middle of the set to keep the set tied, 12-12.
- The Friars went on a 10-3 run to take a 22-15 advantage.
- Columbia went on 3-0 run to close the gap to 22-18, forcing the Friars to call a timeout.
- The Friars were able to maintain their lead and win the set 25-19 and win the match 3-1.
