Volleyball Defeats New Haven In The First Game Of Its Double Header In The Holly Young Invitational, 3-0

The Friars notched a total of 42 kills, improving their record to 2-0.

Durham N.H.- The Providence College volleyball team (2-0) defeated the University of New Haven (0-2) in three sets, 3-0, on Saturday, Aug. 29, in its second match of the Holly Young Invitational in Durham, N.H.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Friars won the first set, 25-14 - 1-0 lead.
  • A kill from senior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) extended the Friars' early lead, 5-3. 
  • New Haven equalized the points with a kill making the score 10-10.
  • A timeout was taken by the Chargers after the Friars took the lead, 14-11.
  • Following a three-point run from the Friars, New Haven took its second timeout while trailing 11-17. 
  • Freshman Gwen Koss (Houston, Texas) ended the set, 25-14, with a service ace to put the Friars up 1-0 in the match.  
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the second set, 26-24, for a 2-0 lead.
  • Both teams traded points early in the set and the score was tied at 4-4.
  • The Chargers took the lead and maintained it to put the Friars in a 16-15 deficit.   
  • Providence fought back to even out the score at 18-18. 
  • Falling behind New Haven, 20-18, the Friars took a timeout. 
  • Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) and Aubrey Easterwood (Dallas, Texas) brought the Friars within one, 21-20, with a block.
  • New Haven took a timeout following the Friars taking the lead, 25-24.
  • Providence closed out the set with a kill from Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) 26-24. 
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the set 25-20 and swept the match, 3-0.
  • The Friars and Chargers traded points early and were tied at 7-7. 
  • A kill from Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) put the Friars up 14-13.
  • Providence extended the lead with a 21-16 advantage.  
  • A late push from the Chargers brought the score to 22-19 with the Chargers leading and the Friars took a timeout.
  • Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) finished out the set with a kill to finalize a 25-20 win. 
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • The Friars had 42 kills and 10 total team blocks. 
  • Junior Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a team high of 11 kills. 
  • Freshman Ava Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) was a standout on defense with 13 digs.
  • Senior Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) and R-Sophomore Sarah Musial (St. Charles, Ill.) had a combined 31 assists for the Friars.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars return to play their final game at the Holly Young Invitational today (Aug. 29th) at 7 p.m. against the University of New Hampshire.
