PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Providence College women's 4x800 team competed in the final day of Penn Relays on Saturday, April 27 in Philadelphia, Pa.
The 4x800 team of Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland), Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England), Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) and Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) were on pace to finish first with a NCAA record time before being disqualified for a dropped baton in the final stretch.
Alex O'Neill began with a 2:05.97 split, followed by May with an impressive time of 2:02.46. Maeve O'Neill ran a 2:05.33 split before Flockhart took the final leg. As Flockhart and the Washington athlete approached the finish line their hands hit one another, and the relay stick was knocked out of Flockhart's hand. Flockhart crossed the line first but as the stick was out of her hand it was an automatic disqualification.
Friar Head Coach Ray Treacy said, "The team ran brilliantly, just so unfortunate to have that incident at the finish line."
