PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 13 Providence College men's hockey team will hit the ice for the first time in 2024-25 as they travel to Union College for an exhibition game on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.

The Friars enter the season picked to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing fourth in the league standings a year ago. The team returns its top-five scorers from 2023-24 – Nick Poisson (9-15-24), Tanner Adams (6-15-21), Chase Yoder (11-9-20), Hudson Malinoski (9-9-18) and Guillaume Richard (3-15-18). Yoder and Poisson were named captains, while Richard and Connor Kelley were named alternate captains.

The incoming freshmen consist of four NHL draft picks, three that were selected in the 2024 NHL Draft held in Las Vegas back in June. Trevor Connelly became the fifth first-round pick of the program, joining Joe Hulbig (13th, 1992), Tom Fitzgerald (17th, 1986), Mark Jankowski (21st, 2012) and Jay O'Brien (19th, 2018) as he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights 19th overall. On day two of the draft, John Mustard was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round (67th overall) and Logan Sawyer was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round (78th overall). Freshman Tomas Machu was a 2021 seventh round (221st overall) selection of the New York Islanders.

Providence also welcomed five graduate transfers – Logan Will (F, Colorado College), Cam Gendron (F, New Hampshire), Carl Fish (D, Minnesota), Ryan O'Reilly (F, Arizona State) and Zachary Borgiel (G, Merrimack).

The visit to Union marks Nate Leaman's return to the College. Leaman spent eight seasons as the Head Coach at Union prior to his hiring at Providence College. The last meeting between the two programs came in the 2019 Catamount Cup in Burlington, Vermont where the teams skated to a 1-1 tie on Dec. 29, 2019. Providence will make its first appearance at Messa Rink since 2008.

The Friars will open the 2024-25 regular season on Saturday, October 12 in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game at the University of North Dakota. Providence will open its home slate with a two-game series against Arizona State from Oct. 18-19.
