ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College field hockey team opened the 2023 season against No. 17 Boston College on Saturday, August 26 in Orono, Maine. The Eagles scored two goals in the second quarter to come away with a 3-0 victory. Boston College improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Friars opened the year 0-1.
1ST QUARTER:
• The opening 15 minutes was scoreless (0-0).
• BC held a 5-0 advantage in shots. Three of BC's five shots were on target.
• Providence College goalkeeper
Asia Porter collected three saves in the opening quarter.
2nd QUARTER:
• The Eagles took a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the second quarter as Simone Hefting converted a penalty corner opportunity. She was assisted by Juliette Hijdra and Margo Carlin.
• BC tacked on another goal on a penalty corner with a minute left to play in the half (29:00).
• The goal stood after an official review, and the Eagles carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
• Mia Garber was credited with the goal, while Peyton Hale and Martina Giacchino each earned assists.
• Porter recorded six saves through the opening 30 minutes of play.
3rd QUARTER:
• The Eagles maintained their 2-0 lead through completion of the third quarter.
• Boston College outshot Providence, 3-0, in the frame.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke 1:25 into the fourth quarter. Hale stepped up and tucked the ball into the left side of the cage for a 3-0 lead (46:25).
• The Friars earned their first penalty corner of the game at 49:32, setting up a shot attempt for
Lisa McNamara. The Eagles blocked the shot and play resumed.
GAME NOTES:
• Porter finished the afternoon with 13 saves.
• With the win, the Eagles improved their lead the all-time series, 26-13.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 27 against Maine (0-1). The match is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
