Field Hockey Opens 2023 Season With A Pair Of Matches Against No. 17 Boston College And Maine

Friars will play back-to-back games against the Eagles and Black Bears in Orono, Maine on Aug. 26-27.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2023 season with a pair of games against No. 17 Boston College and Maine in Orono, Maine. The Friars will face the Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Aug. 26 and will close the weekend with a match against the Black Bears at 1:00 p.m. on Aug. 27.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE: 
• Senior Eleonore de Keyser was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. De Keyser missed her first two seasons with an injury and returned in 2022 to start all 17 games as a central defender.
Ally DeCoste returns for her senior season after leading the team in scoring a year ago with 15 points on five goals and five assists. She scored 12 of her 15 points during BIG EAST Conference play (4g/4a).
Asia Porter played all 17 games in goal last season and registered a 2.59 goals against average and a 0.697 save percentage. She recorded two shut-out victories against Georgetown and Holy Cross.
• Providence finished the 2022 season with a 5-12 overall record and played nine of its 17 games on the road (2-7).
• This season, Providence will play 12 home games. Once the Friars complete opening weekend in Orono, they will have just four road games the remainder of the regular season and will play 10 of their next 11 games at home on Lennon Family Field.
• Providence will host Bryant in its home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sept. 1 at 3:00 p.m. The match-up is the start of a six-game homestand for the Friars. Additionally, the Bryant game 
• Providence was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Lisa McNamara has returned for a fifth-season as a graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to student-athletes because of the Covid-19 pandemic. She has played 59 games during her career, including 38 appearances in the starting line-up. McNamara has recorded 23 career points on five goals and 13 assists. She is 4-5 during her career in penalty-stroke opportunities.
• The Friars have added eight newcomers to the roster for the 2023 season.
• In May, the program announced its 2023 team captains: Emily Antunes, Marley Mailloux, Eleonore de Keyser and Lisa McNamara.
 
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE:
• Boston College is ranked 17th in the NFHCA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• The Eagles will face Maine on Aug. 25 at 1:00 p.m. in Orono, Maine before taking on the Friars.
• The Eagles were picked to finish fifth in the ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll, among the league's seven members. All seven ACC teams finished the 2022 season ranked among the top-25 of the NFHCA poll.
• Graduate student Margo Carlin was named to the 2023 Preseason All-ACC Team. She finished the 2022 campaign ranked second on the team in points (18) and goals (seven). Carlin is a three-time First Team All-American.
• The Eagles return their top-five scorers from a season ago and 10 of 14 players overall who recorded at least one point.
• Peyton Hale led BC with 20 points on eight goals and four assists.
• BC also returns two experienced goalkeepers in Carine Van Wiechen and Emily Gillespie. Van Wiechen logged 647 minutes in the cage and recorded a 2.51 goals against average and a 0.630 save percentage. She made 12 appearances overall and posted a 4-6-0 record with one shutout. Gillespie played 486 minutes in goal and registered a 2.22 goals against average and  0.617 save percentage. She finished the year with a 4-3 record and one shutout.
• Boston College leads the all-time series against Providence, 25-13, including victories in each of the last 12 meetings.
 
SCOUTING MAINE:
• The Black Bears were picked to finish second in the America East Preseason Poll (51 points) behind UAlbany, who picked up eight first-place votes and 64 points overall.
• Last season, Maine one its second-consecutive regular-season title in the America East, posting an 8-0 record in conference play (14-5 overall).
• The Black Bears will have one game under their belt before facing the Friars. On Aug. 25, Maine will host No. 17 Boston College at 1:00 p.m. 
• Poppy Lambert returns to the field after a record-breaking season in 2022, during which she set the program's single-season record for points (51). Lambert is the reigning America East Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team All-American.
• Maine also returns its core of defenders on the backline with two-time captain Hannah Abbott and senior Kristjana Walker joining Lambert.
• The Black Bears will be leaning on a new full-time goalkeeper this season as Mia Borley exhausted her eligibility following the 2022 season. She started all 18 games and posted a 1.68 goals against average and a 0.770 save percentage.
• Fifth-year goalkeeper Mallory Drayer will team up with freshman Jayde Temby in goal this season. Drayer has appeared in 12 career games (244 minutes) and has recorded a 2.71 goals against average and a 0.633 save percentage. Last season, she saw action in five games.  
• The Friars last defeated the Black Bears on Sept. 1, 2019, when the squad claimed a 5-4 overtime victory in Orono.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will host Bryant at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. on Friday, Sept. 1 at 3:00 p.m. It marks the first match of a six-game homestand for the Friars.
