Friars Fall To Maine In Orono, 2-0

Providence returns to Lennon Family Field where it will play 10 of its next 11 games.

ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Maine, 2-0, on Sunday, Aug. 27 in Orono, Maine. The Friars dropped to 0-2 on the season, while Maine improved to 1-1. 
 
1st QUARTER:
• Maine got on the board at the 10:39 mark for a 1-0 lead. Brynn Dzengelewski sent a ball into the circle from the left side of the field and Mallory Mackesy redirected it into the cage for the goal. 
• The Friars were awarded a penalty stroke at 12:43, but Lisa McNamara's attempt was saved by Maine's goalkeeper Mallory Drayer.
• The Black Bears outshot the Friars 4-1, including a 2-0 edge in shots on goal.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Bears tacked on a second goal as Poppy Lambert converted a penalty stroke opportunity at 25:35. 
• The Friars charged down the field on their next offensive possession to earn four-consecutive penalty corners, but were unable to find the back of the cage.
• Through the first half of play, Providence held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners, while Maine posted a 6-1 advantage in shot attempts (3-1 shots on goal). 
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The third quarter was scoreless as Maine held on to its 2-0 lead.
• Both teams registered four penalty corners and two shots during the frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence nearly cut the deficit in half with its first goal of the season on a penalty corner, but the goal was called off due to a foul off the ball.
• Maine earned six penalty corners in the final quarter and outshot the Friars 6-1.
 
NOTES:
• Providence goalkeeper Asia Porter was credited with seven saves on the day. 
• The Black Bears split the goalkeeping duties, with each playing 30 minutes. Drayer recorded one save or Maine in the first half and Jayde Temby collected one save in the second half.
• The Friars were outshot 14-4 during the game (9-2 SOG). Maine also held the advantage in penalty corners, 13-9.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return home to Providence, R.I. to host Bryant at Lennon Family Field on Friday, Sept. 1. The match sets up a six-game home stand for the Friars, who will play 10 of their next 11 games.
