The Friars secured seven first-place finishes.
KINGSTON, R.I.- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed in Kingston, R.I. at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The Friar women secured four first-place finishes. Jill Fennerty, Meg Hughes, Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland), and Taylor Newman (Old Tappan, N.J.) won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:00.64. Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) finished first in the 3000-meter in a time of 9:55.87. Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) ran the 1000-meter in a time of 2:51.99 for a first-place finish. Tessa Hunt finished the one mile in 4:57.77 for first place.
Claire Kelly (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) followed Hunt with a fourth-place finish (5:07.37) in the mile. Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) had a fourth-place finish in the 500-meter with a time of 1:19.18. Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) ran the 200-meter dash in 25.67 for second place, followed by Jill Fennerty (Franklin, Mass.) in third place with a time of 26.00.
The Friar men recorded three first-place finishes. Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) sealed a first-place finish in the 1000-meter with a time of 2:29.24. Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) won the 800-meter (1:55.58). Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) ran a 1:06.60 in the 500-meter placing first and marking a new personal record.
Tim Dolan (Cinnaminson, N.J.) followed Lewin in the 500-meter with a fifth-place finish (1:08.06). Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) and William Rainey (San Jose, Calif.) finished in fifth (22.98) and sixth (23.05) in the 200-meter run, respectively.
Next weekend the Friars will compete at Boston University's Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 in Boston, Mass.
