PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced its 2022 Division I Scholar All-Americans earlier this week [June 20]. Providence College graduate
Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) and senior
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) were recognized as USILA Scholar All-Americans.
There have been 10 players in the history of the Providence men's lacrosse program to earn USILA Scholar All-America accolades. McGreen and Grillo join former Friars Michael Perettine (2016), Will Mazzone (2016), Jarrod Neumann (2017), Tate Boyce (2019),
Tim Hinrichs (2020),
Dan Axelson (2021),
Toby Burgdorf (2021) and
Emmett Jennings (2021).
McGreen, a former All-BIG EAST selection, played in 10 games for the Friars during the 2022 campaign, including two appearances in the starting line-up. His season was cut short due to injury. He recorded 13 points on eight goals and two assists and added seven groundballs and two caused turnovers to his stat line. For his career, McGreen totaled 89 points on 50 goals and 39 assists.
Grillo started all 14 games for the Friars at attack and led the team in points (45) and goals (36), while adding nine assists. He closed out the 2022 season with single-game career highs in points (nine) goals (six) and added three assists during the Friars' 20-14 victory over BIG EAST foe St. John's. During Grillo's four years with the program he totaled 135 points on 109 goals and 26 assists. He is just the fifth player in program history to record 100+ goals and currently ranks third all-time in career goals (109). Additionally, his 135 points ranks 14
th all-time. At the conclusion of the 2022 campaign, Grillo was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens in their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II, and III.
A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.
Additionally, the team's overall academic performance was recognized by with USILA with the USILA Academic Team Award for the second-consecutive year. The award is granted to each Division I men's lacrosse program that achieves a Team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
