PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Friar Invitational at the
Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field in Providence, R.I. on April 8. The meet featured 14 men's and women's teams. Nine new facility records were set.
In the mile,
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) finished first, setting a new personal best with the first sub four-minute mile of his career in 3:59.06. Back's time was the first sub-four mile at the
Ray Treacy Track facility, besting the previous record by 4.19 seconds. Fellow Friars
AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) and
Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) finished shortly behind Back both with four-minute flat miles. Ernst placed third in a time of 4:00.36 while White finished fourth with a personal best of 4:00.80.
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) also tabbed a first-place finish for the Friars with a 13:56.44 finish in the 5,000-meters.
David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) and Matt Lepine (Red Bank, N.J.) ran personal bests in 13:59.63 and 14:12.43, respectively.
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) 1:52.69 placed first in his heat in the 800-meters.
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) appeared in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished second in 8:54.07.
Jacob Hefele (Danbury, Conn.) raced in the 3,000-meters and finished in 8:30.90.
In the 200-meters,
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) finished in a time of 22.59. Lehman appeared again later in the meet in the 400-meters, where he placed second in a time of 49.68.
Chris Johns (Longmeadow, Mass.) placed first in the high jump with a 1.95m finish.
On the women's side,
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) took first in the 5,000-meters with a personal best of 16:09.43. Mooney's time was 17.51 seconds ahead of the next runner.
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) finished in 16:45.26.
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England),
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) and
Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand) raced in the mile. Flockhart claimed second-place in 4:39.14. May finished in fourth with a personal best of 4:41.44 and Hunt finished in seventh (4:56.88).
Hawa Grear (Providence, R.I.),
Nicola Calabrese (North Babylon, N.Y.),
Danielle Casavant (Falmouth, Maine) and
Eve Rodriguez (Norton, Mass.) raced in the 100-meters. Grear finished in a time of 12.64 while Calabrese and Casavant both ran personal bests of 12.86 and 13.15, respectively. Rodriguez had a finish of 13.21.
In the 400-meters,
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland),
Taylor Newman (Old Tappan, N.J.) and
Emme Conan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) represented Providence. Gowing finished third (57.28) while Newman recorded a personal best of 57.92. Conan finished in 61.58.
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) tabbed a first-place finish and set a new facility record with a 2:07.41 finish in the 800-meters. O'Neill was followed by fellow Friar
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) who finished second in a time of 2:09.58.
In the 3,000-meters Lily Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) finished fourth in 9:26.95.
Junior
Nicole Borowiec ran a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles of 14.51. Borowiec's time set a new program and facility record. She returned later in the meet in the 200-meters, placing second in a time of 26.58.
