WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated Georgetown University in five sets on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Georgetown won the first set, 25-22.
- The score differential remained within three points through the entirety of the set, with both teams trading 2-3 point runs from start to finish.
- The set contained 10 ties and seven lead changes.
- Providence called two late timeouts in attempts to rally for the lead but ultimately wasn't able to overcome the Hoyas. Georgetown took the set, 25-22.
- Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) paced the Friars offensively with four kills and two service aces.
- Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) led the Friars defensively with five digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence battled back to take set two, 25-17.
- After an early 3-3 tie, Providence was able inch away from Georgetown to hold a steady lead.
- Georgetown got as close as three (15-12) in the middle stages of the set, however, the Friars were able to expand their lead to as big as eight (23-15), eventually taking the set, 25-17.
- Mullally and Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) combined for 10 assists.
- Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) hit a team-best .500, recording five kills.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Hoyas won the third set, 27-25, for a 2-1 edge in the match.
- Georgetown opened the third frame with a 6-3 run, Providence responded with four straight points, putting the Friars ahead 7-6.
- Much like the first set, the teams traded 2-3 point runs for the majority of the set.
- At the point of a 22-22 tie, Georgetown called a timeout. Out of the break, the teams went point-for-point the next six points until Georgetown scored two-straight points to clinch the win, 27-25.
- Nelson added six kills, hitting .545, followed by Kayla Grant's (Rowlett, Texas) four kills, hitting a team-best .800.
- Jiji Lykins (Coral Springs, Fla.) collected five digs.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence evened the match, 2-2, with a 25-12 win in the fourth set.
- Providence notched six-straight points to take an early 8-3 lead. The Friars' spurt included three kills from Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas).
- Providence went on an eight-point run to close the set, led by Mullally's two service aces.
- The Friars limited the Hoyas to just 12 points.
- Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) hit a perfect 1.000, notching four kills. Rudich also added a solo block and a block assist.
- Rhoden recorded five kills.
- Taylor and Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville, Centre, N.Y.) combined for 11 assists.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the match with a fifth set triumph, 15-9.
- A late timeout by Providence led to five-straight Friar points for the victory in the deciding set.
- Taylor collected seven digs and combined with Ruggles and Mullally for eight total assists.
MATCH NOTES:
- Emma Nelson recorded a season-high 19 kills, hitting .381.
- Mackenzie Taylor collected a team-best 23 digs.
- Brielle Mullally notched a double-double with 24 assists and 17 digs.
- The Friars had 61 total kills and 75 total digs.
