Men's And Women's Swimming & Diving Programs Host Holy Cross On Senior Day

The men's defeated the Crusaders, 193-95; The women's team fell to Holy Cross by a narrow margin of 154-146.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving programs hosted Holy Cross on Jan. 22 in Providence, R.I. It marked the final home meet of the 2021-22 season for the Friars at Taylor Natatorium and served as the program's senior day. The men defeated Holy Cross in convincing fashion, 193-95, while the women fell to the Crusaders by a narrow margin (154-146).
Seth Brodnick, Justin Viotto, Will Layden and McGovern Brown swept the individual freestyle events for the men. Brodnick dominated the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:38.21, which was 10 seconds faster than his fellow teammate Nick Garrepy – and 25-seconds faster than his nearest competitor from Holy Cross. Brodnick also captured top honors in the 400-meter free, with a time of 4:14.14. Viotto edged out teammate Alex Beauchene (1:56.59) for first-place during a competitive finish in the 200-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 1:56.51. Brown was the top finisher in the 50-meter free with a time of 24.04, and Layden claimed first in the 100-meter freestyle (52.63).
The dominance continued as Layden, Aidan Hughes, Brown and Viotto teamed up to win the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:33.21).
The men also claimed the 200-meter medley relay as Brown, Kevin Hood, Ryan Sharp and Layden bested the field with a time of 1:45.30.
Hood grabbed the top spot in the 100-meter breaststroke with a finishing time of 1:04.81, while Will Karafanda rounded out the individual winners for the Friars, claiming first in both rounds of 1-meter diving. In the first round, Karafanda recorded a score of 281.70 and finished the second round with a score of 282.97.
On the women's side, the Friars got the meet going with a first-place finish in the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Sally Alrutz, Hannah Weber, Katherine Winklosky and Courtney Reilly completed the event in a time of 2:03.80.
Alrutz went on to claim and individual victory in the 100-meter backstroke with a finishing mark of 1:06.18, and also took home a win in the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.97).
Madeline O'Connor got the best of an exciting finish in the 200-meter butterfly with a first-place finish in 2:29.91. She beat out Holy Cross competitor Ava Westfall, who touched the wall in 2:08.75. O'Connor also won the 200-meter IM during the meet (2:28.90).
Taylor Loud earned the win in the 50-meter free (27.93), and Reilly topped the field in the 100-meter freestyle (1:00.09).
Taylor Barber rounded out the list of individual winners for the women by taking first in the opening round (1 of 2) in the 1-meter dive, with a total of 271.20 points.
The Providence College swimming and diving programs will hit the road to close out dual meet competition against the University of Maine on Jan. 29 in Orono, Maine. Final preparation for the BIG EAST Championships will take place at the Husky Invitational on Feb. 5, and the Friars will head to East Meadow, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 23-26.
