ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Orono, Maine to compete on Friday, Jan. 28. The men defeated the University of Maine in dual-meet action, 192-92. The women's team took part in a tri-meet with host Maine and the University of New Hampshire. The Friars fell to Maine, 187-151, and UNH, 227-109.
The men won 13 individual events on the day and claimed victories in both relays en route to a convincing team victory.
Seth Brodnick took home the first individual victory of the day for the Friars in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.25. Will Layden doubled up on the day with victories in the 50-yard free (21.89) and 100-yard freestyle events (47.89).
Providence continued its strong showing in the freestyle events with
Justin Viotto's wins in the 500-yard free (4:48.85). Viotto went on to win three individual events overall with victories in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.09) and 200-yard IM (1:58.27).
McGovern Brown outpaced the field in the 100-yard backstroke (52.80), while
Aidan Hughes was victorious in the 200-yard back (1:58.71) and
Ryan Sharp captured a win in the 100-yard butterfly (52.44).
Kevin Hood joined Viotto as a three-time winner. He topped the field in the 100-yard backstroke in 58:16 and claimed victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.16) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.86).
Will Karafanda compiled 247.50 points to claim top honors in the 1-meter diving event, defeating Riley Clark, who recorded 234.20 points.
McGovern Brown, Hood, Sharp and
Brian Cantin teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.45. The Friars swept the relays as Cantin, Hughes, Brown and Layden finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.80).
On the women's side,
Sally Alrutz topped the field in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 27.91. Alrutz also tied for first place in the 100-yard backstroke with fell Friar teammate
Sophia Roche. Both touched the wall ahead of their competitors in 1:02.96.
Nicole Boutry completed the 50-yard freestyle in second place with a time of 24.71, which was just two-tenths of a second off the first-place finish by New Hampshire's Chiara Pradissitto (24.50).
