DURHAM, N.H. – Providence College volleyball defeated University of New Hampshire in four sets (23-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-23) on the final day of the UNH Holly Young Tournament (Sept. 4). With the victory, the Friars finish the tournament weekend 3-0 and improve their record to 6-1.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: New Hampshire held the lead for the entire first set after the teams early 4-4 tie and won the set 25-23.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) and
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) led the Friars attack with four kills apiece.
Barber led Providence in assists (six).
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) had a team-high four digs in the first set.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:The Friars rallied back from the first set with a 25-12 victory in the second. A 7-1 run in the middle of the set pushed Providence ahead to claim victory.
The Friars held the Wildcats to a -.143 hitting percentage in the set.
Rhoden led the attack with five kills.
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) led the Friars in digs (four), while Barber paced the Friars in assists (11).
Providence had four total team blocks in the second set.
Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) and Barber each had two block assists.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars held the lead in the third set wire to wire and closed the set with a 25-22 victory.
Rhoden and Fink led the Friars in kills, tallying five each while Barber lead in assists (12).
Freshman
Alicja Pokrzywa (Parsippany, N.J.) led the Friars in digs (five).
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars claimed the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.
Providence held UNH to a .196 hitting percentage and had two total team blocks.
Rhoden led the Friars in kills in the fourth set (seven).
Barber again led in assists (16).
Benson tallied eight digs, while
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Pokrzywa added six digs each in the fourth set.
MATCH NOTES:
The Friars had three players with double digit kills with Rhoden (21), Nelson (12) and Fink (10).
Barber tallied a total of 45 assists to lead all players in the match.
Providence had three players with double digit digs. Benson recorded 18 digs and Pokrzywa and
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) each recorded 12.
Rudich totaled four block assists in the victory.
Rhoden, Barber and Fink each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Rhoden was named MVP.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will play a mid-week match against Merrimack College on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to North Andover, Mass.
