AMHERST, MASS. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 22 UMass, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex in Amherst, Mass.
1ST QUARTER:
• Through the opening 15 minutes of play there was just one shot attempt, which was credited to Claire Danahy of UMass. Her attempt was blocked at 3:01 by a Providence defender.
2ND QUARTER:
• The Minutewomen registered the first penalty corner for either team and converted the game's first goal at 22:25. Hannah Gast scored on a direct shot, assisted by Josie Rossbach and Jess Beech.
• UMass held a 6-0 advantage in shots during the first half of play, due in large part to a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
•
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) recorded two saves in the cage for the Friars.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars started off the third quarter with their first look at the cage as senior
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) sent a shot wide of the cage.
• The Minutewomen outshot the Friars, 7-1, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.
• Porter backstopped the Friars' defense with five saves, giving her team a chance to level the score in the final 15 minutes of action.
4TH QUARTER:
• UMass got an insurance goal at 52:57, once again, on a set piece.
• Mus Defauwes scored on a direct shot assisted by Danahy and Amalie Green.
• Providence got two good looks at the cage late in the fourth as
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) and
Cami Crook (Somerset, Mass.) pressured UMass' goalkeeper with back-to-back shots.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Four of the Friars' five losses have come against teams ranked in the national poll this season.
• Porter finished the day with eight saves in goal for the Friars.

• The Friars return to action against 15
th-ranked Connecticut in a BIG EAST Conference showdown on Friday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
