STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 16 Connecticut, 3-0, on Friday, Oct. 1 at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.
1ST QUARTER:
• The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie (0-0).
• Connecticut held a 4-0 advantage in shots, but only one of those attempts was on target.
2ND QUARTER:
• UConn took a 1-0 lead at 23:03 as Claire Jandwerth scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Jessica Dembrowski and Lindsay Dickinson on the play.
• Providence earned a penalty corner with 53-seconds left on the clock, but
Roos Michiels' (Noord-Brabrant, The Netherlands) shot attempt was blocked.
• The Huskies took the ball down the field and managed to take a 2-0 lead with seven seconds left as Nanne Eijkman sent home a centering feed from Madi Herb.
• UConn held a slim advantage in shots during the quarter (4-3) and corners (2-1).
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence earned a corner at 34:42 and was able to put two quality attempts on cage, but UConn turned away both attempts.
• The Friars outshot the Huskies 4-1 in the early going of the third.
• At 37:50, the Friars were assessed a yellow card for which they played down a player for the next five minutes.
• UConn maintained its 2-0 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
• Each team registered one penalty corner in the third, while the Friars outshot the Huskies, 5-4.
4TH QUARTER:
• Much of the action was spent in the midfield during the fourth quarter, until the Huskies scored an insurance goal on the first penalty corner of the frame.
• Jandewerth was credited with the goal at 57:06 and she was assisted by Morgan Kaufmann and Aiyi Young.
• The Huskies went on to earn the 3-0 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Connecticut finished the game with the lead in shots (15-8), shots on goal (7-4) and penalty corners (6-2).
•
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) made four saves in the cage for Providence.
• UConn's Cheyenne Sprecher also collected four saves in net.
• The Friars drop to 5-6 on the year (1-2 BIG EAST).
• Five of the Friars' six losses have come against teams who have been ranked in the NFHCA National Coaches' Poll this season.
• All six losses have come on the road.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return home to host VCU for its annual Alumni Day on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
