Field Hockey Set To Host VCU For Alumni Day

Friars and Rams will square off at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will host VCU on Sunday, Oct. 3 for the program's annual Alumni Day. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on FloSports.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (5-5, 1-1 BIG EAST): 
• The Friars enter the weekend with a 5-6 overall record, including a 1-2 mark in BIG EAST play.
• Providence is 5-0 at home on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I., but has posted a 0-6 record on the road this season.
• Providence will play six of its remaining seven games at home on Lennon Family Field, including three-straight beginning with the Rams on Sunday.
• The Friars earned their first BIG EAST victory on Friday, Sept 24 against Georgetown (2-1).
• In Providence's most recent game, the team fell to No. 16 Connecticut in BIG EAST play, 3-0, on Oct. 1 in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies led in shots (15-8), shots on goal (7-4) and penalty corners (6-2). 
• After a scoreless first quarter, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 22:40. The game was evenly played in the second quarter, but UConn managed to get an insurance goal with seven seconds remaining until the half. 
• Providence had earned a penalty corner, during which Roos Michiels' (Noord-Brabrant, The Netherlands) shot was blocked by a UConn defender. The Huskies broke out and sent a long pass down the field where Madi Herb fed Nanne Eijkman at the left post for the last-second tally.
• Five of the Friars' six losses have come against opponents either currently ranked in the national poll (No. 14 Harvard, No. 20 Monmouth, No. 22 UMass, No. 16 Connecticut) or were previously ranked (Maine).
• Midfielder Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) and forward Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) are tied for the team lead in scoring with 11 points each. McNamara has two goals and a team-best seven assists, while Gowing has notched four goals and three assists.
• Forward Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) is third on the team in scoring with eight points on four goals.
• Sophomore Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) has played 679 minutes in the cage for Providence and owns a 2.39 goals against average and a 0.750 save percentage.  
• Offensively, 10 different players on the roster have recorded a goal or an assist in the Friars' first 11 games.
• Junior Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Goddard-Despot competed for Canada at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championships (Aug. 21-29) in Santiago, Chile. The Canadians won the gold medal. After missing the Friars' first two games, she made her 2021 season debut with the Friars against Maine and Harvard.
• Goddard-Despot is fourth among her teammates in scoring with seven points on two goals and three assists. 
• Fourteen of the 24 players on the Friars' roster are first and second-year players, who are in the midst of their first full fall season of collegiate field hockey.
• The remainder of the roster consists of two graduate students, three seniors and five juniors.
 
SCOUTING VCU (6-3): 
• The Rams enter Sunday's match against Providence with a 6-3 overall record and are in the midst of a two-game win streak.
• In their most recent game, the Rams defeated No. 21 UMass, 1-0, on Oct. 1 in Amherst, Mass.
• Janne Wetzel scored the lone goal for VCU in the match and also leads the offense through nine games this season, with 13 points on six goals and one assist.
• Maite Sturm is second in scoring (11 points), having recorded two goals and a team-high seven assists.
• Lonica McKinney rounds out the list of players who have reached double-digit points. She is third in scoring with 10 points and second in goals (five).
• Sasha Elliott has played 528 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 1.33 goals against average and a 0.808 save percentage.
• Four of Elliott's six wins have been shut-out victories.
• VCU first-year Assistant Coach Megan Guilbert is a 2018 graduate of Providence College, and played for the Friars from 2014-17. She then joined the Friars' coaching staff as a graduate assistant for two seasons (2018-19).
• Guilbert, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection, played 49 games during her career as a goalkeeper with the Friars. She finished her career with a 26-18 record, a 1.77 goals against average and a 0.732 save percentage.

• Providence will host Temple in BIG EAST play on Friday, Oct. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on FloSports.
