Lisa McNamara tallied a career-high four points on one goal and two assists.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team opened the 2021 season with a 4-0 victory against intrastate rival Bryant at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
1ST QUARTER:
• Graduate student Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) got the Friars on the board 8:41 into the action as she deflected a feed from junior Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) on the doorstep of the cage.
• The score remained 1-0 through the opening 15 minutes of play.
• Providence outshot Bryant, 9-0, and held a 5-0 edge in penalty corners.
2ND QUARTER:
• A pair of first-year players gave the Friars a 3-0 advantage in the second quarter.
• Sophomore Roos Michiels (Noord-Brabrant, The Netherlands) connected on her first collegiate goal for the Friars off a direct shot on a penalty corner. She was assisted by senior Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) and McNamara at 19:03.
• Freshman Celia Preveza (Danbury, Conn.) tallied her first career goal at 22:45 to make it 3-0. She finished a feed at the right post off an assist from junior Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine).
• At the half, Providence led in shots (13-0) and offensive corners (7-0).
3RD QUARTER:
• McNamara converted a penalty-stroke opportunity at 44:00 to extend Providence's lead to 4-0.
• The Friars outshot the Bulldogs 8-0 in the third frame.
4TH QUARTER:
• Bryant earned its first offensive opportunity of the game in the circle, earning a penalty corner with 2:01 remaining in regulation. However, the shot attempt was deemed high and whistled out by the official.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
• McNamara finished the night with a career-best four points on one goal and two assists.
• The Friars completed the night with advantages in shots (23-0), shots on goal (19-0) and corners (10-1).
• Six players recorded at least one point for PC on either a goal or assist.
• Bryant's goalkeeper, Marijn Jaarsma collected 14 saves for the Bulldogs.
